[1] فَضَلَ , aor. فَضُلَ ; and فَضِلَ, aor. فَضِلَ ; and فَضِلَ, aor. فَضُلَ ; three syn. dial. vars.; (S, O, Msb, K;) the second mentioned by ISk; and the third [said to be] anomalous and unparalleled; (S, O;) [but] it is a compound of two thereof, (S, O, Msb, K,) accord. to the companions of Sb, (S, O,) i. e. a compound of the second and the third, (K,) like نَعِمَ having for its aor. يَنْعُمُ, (Sb, S, O, Msb,) and نَكِلَ, aor. يَنْكُلُ, [but this I do not find in its proper art.,] and حَضِرَ, aor. يَحْضُرُ, [but this is disallowed by some,] and فَرِغَ, aor. يَفْرُغُ, among perfect verbs, (Msb,) and مِتَّ, aor. تَمُوتُ, and دِمْتَ, aor. تَدُومُ, (Sb, S, O, Msb,) and كِدْتَ, aor. تَكُودُ; (Sb, S;) inf. n. فَضْلٌ: (S, * O, * Msb, K: *) all signify It exceeded; or was, or became, redundant, or superfluous; [syn. زَادَ;] being used in relation to الفَضْلُ (K, MF, TA) meaning الزِّيَادَةُ, as Ibn-Es-Seed says, (MF, TA,) [i. e.] as meaning the contr. of النَّقْصُ: (K, TA:) or the first of the three, i. e. فضَلَ, aor. فَضُلَ , inf. n. فَضْلٌ, signifies thus, i. q. زَادَ, (Msb,) and فُضْلٌ and فُضُلٌ are also inf. ns. [of the same, i. e.] signifying زِيَادَةٌ, as in the saying, in a trad., accord. to different relaters, إِنَّ لِلّٰهِ مَلَائِكَةً سَيَّارَةً فُضْلًا عَلَى المَلَائِكَةِ المُرَتَّبِينَ مَعَ الخَلَائِقِ and فُضُلًا [i. e. Verily to God belong angels who occupy themselves in ranging about, in addition to the angels who are stationed among the created, or human and other, beings]: (TA:) and all the three dial. vars. mentioned above signify it remained [of a greater quantity or number]; syn. بَقِىَ; (S, * O, * Msb;) you say, فَضَلَ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ, aor. فَضُلَ ; and فَضِلَ, aor. فَضَلَ ; and فَضِلَ, aor. فَضُلَ ; somewhat remained thereof: (S, O:) or from الفَضْلُ as meaning البَقِيَّةُ, you say فَضَلَ like نَصَرَ, [i. e. aor. فَضُلَ ,] and فَضِلَ like حَسِبَ, [implying that the aor. is فَضَلَ and فَضِلَ ,] (K,) [accord. to the TK meaning it had somewhat remaining, but accord. to SM,] using these verbs [which are said by him to be like نَصَرَ and سَمِعَ and حَسِبَ, the last as mentioned by Lh,] in the phrase فَضَلَ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ [expl. above]. (TA.) ― 2-b2- [فَضَلَ is trans. as well as intrans.] One says, فَضَلَهُ and فَضَلَ عَلَيْهِ, [aor. فَضُلَ ,] inf. ns. فَضْلٌ and فُضُولٌ, [but see a distinction made between these two words voce فَضْلٌ, below,] meaning He, or it, exceeded, or excelled, him, or it. (MA.) See also 4. [And see فَضْلٌ below, last signification.] الفَضْلُ as meaning The overcoming, or surpassing, in highness, elevation, or eminence, of rank, condition, or estimation, has but one form of verb, فَضَلَ, aor. فَضُلَ , like قَعَدَ, aor. يَقْعُدُ: he who relates the saying of the poet, وَجَدْنَا نَهْشَلًا فَضَلَتْ فُقَيْمَا [We found, or have found, that Nahshal (the tribe so called) overcame &c., or have overcome &c., Fukeym (another tribe)], pronouncing the ض [in فضلت] with kesr, errs; not distinguishing between the two meanings: so says Ibn-Es-Seed, in the book entitled “ Kitáb el-Fark: ” and Es- Seymuree says, in his book entitled “ Kitáb etTebsireh, ” فَضَلَ, aor. فَضُلَ , like نَصَرَ, aor. يَنْصُرُ, is from الفَضْلُ meaning the ruling [others] as a chief, lord, or master. (TA.) And فَضَلَهُ signifies also [simply] He overcame him; surpassed him; or gained ascendency, or the mastery, over him. (TA.) See also 3.

[1] كَبُرَ , aor. كَبُرَ , (S, A, Msb, K,) inf. n. كُبْرٌ (A, Msb, K) and كِبَرٌ and كَبَارَةٌ, (A, K,) He, (TA,) or it, (Msb,) was, or became, great, [big, or large in body, or corporeal substance: and in years, or age; (when said of a human being, often particularly signifying he attained to puberty;) and in estimation or rank or dignity;] contr. of ضَغُرَ; (A, K;) syn. عَظُمَ, (S, Msb, K,) and جَسُمَ. (K.) [In the K the pret. is twice mentioned: where it is explained as signifying the contr. of صَغُرَ, the above inf. ns. are mentioned, as in the A: where it is explained by عَظُمَ and جَسُمَ in the K, no inf. n. is mentioned; but in the TA it is there said that in the sense of عَظُمَ it relates to an affair or case, and that the inf. n. is كِبَرٌ and كَبَارَةٌ; and that in the sense of جَسُمَ it relates to anything.] ― 2-b2- كَبُرَ الأَمْرُ [The affair, or case, was, or became, of great moment; it was, or became, momentous: or it signifies as in the phrase next following]. (A.) ― 2-b3- كَبُرَ عَلَيْهِ الأَمْرُ The affair, or case, was, or became, difficult, hard, severe, grievous, distressing, afflictive, troublesome, or burdensome, to him or in its effect upon him; syn. شَقَّ. (A, * TA.) In this sense the verb is used in the Kur, x, 72, (TA,) and xlii, 11. (Bd, ii. 42.) And so in the Kur again, xvii, 53, أَوْ خَلْقًا مِمَّا يَكْبُرُ فِى صدُورِكُمْ, (TA,) meaning, أَوْخَلْقًا مِمَّا يَكْبُرُ عِنْدَكُمْ عَنْ قُبُولِ الحَيَاةِ [Or a created thing of those which are too difficult in your minds to receive life], as being the thing most remote from capability to receive life. (Bd.) [This signification is from the primary application of the verb.] ＝ 1-A2- كَبِرَ, aor. كَبَرَ , inf. n. كِبَرٌ and مَكْبِرٌ, He (a man, S, a human being, and a beast, TA, and a child, Msb,) became full-grown, or old, or advanced in age. (S, K.) Hence the prov., كَبِرَ عَمْرُو عَنِ الطَّوْقِ: see art. طوق.] ― 2-b2- [In modern Arabic, and, I believe, sometimes, in classic authors, it also signifies He became big; (said of a boy, or child, in the TA in art. رع, &c.;) i. e. attained to full growth: and to adolescence: and to puberty: see كَبِيرٌ.] This form of the verb and that first mentioned are sometimes erroneously used, each for the other, by persons of distinction as well as by the vulgar. (TA.) ― 2-b3- See كَبْرَةٌ, below. ＝ 1-A3- كَابَرْتُهُ فَكَبَرْتُهُ, aor. of the latter, كَبُرَ : see 3. ― 2-b2- كَبَرَهُ بِسَنَةٍ, aor. كَبُرَ , He exceeded me in age by a year. (K.) And مَا كَبَرَنِى إِلَّا بِسَنَةٍ He did not exceed me in age save by a year. (IAar.)

ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا ٱلْكِتَٰبَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۖ فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ وَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌۢ بِٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَضْلُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Then We gave the Book for an inheritance to those of Our servants whom We chose. And of them are some who are breaking down their own selves by suppressing their desires, and of them are some who keep to the right course, and of them are some who excel others in acts of goodness by Allah’s leave. And that indeed is the great distinction.

42:23

تَرَى ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا۟ وَهُوَ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فِى رَوْضَاتِ ٱلْجَنَّاتِ ۖ لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَضْلُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Thou wilt see the wrongdoers in fear on account of that which they have earned, and it is sure to befall them. But those who believe and do good works will be in the meadows of the Gardens. They shall have with their Lord whatever they will desire. That is the great bounty of God.
